]]>Christmas morning of 2011 this year brought lots of thick sea smoke to Duck Cove in Maine. Sea smoke is a heavy fog that collects near the surface of the water when the water is much warmer than the air, in this case the air temp was about 0 degrees f.

I love when we have a nice foggy day that provides great atmosphere for making images, late in the afternoon this day, I noticed that the light was getting nice and weird as the fog was thinning and the sky was popping through, so I rushed down to Seal Cove and sprinted ( well you can't really sprint in Muck boots but you know what I mean) across the low tide bottom of the inner harbor to get this scene. the tide was so low that it looked like a river here instead of a cove. Acadia National Park, I was out shooting rocks and surf one day this past summer (2011) and I came upon a group of German tourists who were posing on top of this giant granite boulder out in the surf, breathlessly I set up a shot hoping to resemble an apparition of sorts, of a nameless and faceless visitor to the ocean who doesn't even realize how dangerous it is to be there- the waves could have washed her in at any second, but gladly she scampered away unscathed, and after I had made the picture.

]]>So many times I end up making my favorite shot at the very end of the shooting day. Started at location number one (1) and made some reasonable images, went on to location number two (2) and shot for another 2 hours, scenes of ice, and it was only when I was cold and wet and packing up when I found these ice beads, so I spent another 30 minutes with my tripod submerged and only the ball head sticking out of the stream to catch this one.

]]>Maine, finally starting to look like winter after a belated start. Found some great atmosphere yesterday after the snow fell and it warmed up enough to steam, and here's more scary frozen lake action where it looks like it had melted holes in the surface only to find they were puddles on at least 6 inches of clear ice (clear= fast freezing), but every few feet I had to stop and sweep some snow away to check again to see if the ice was still there. I've never fallen through and so help me, I never will, and have gone over the contingency plans in my mind just in case, and watched enough Bear Grylls to think I'll know what to do. Forget that stripping down and making a fire bit though! Whatever, I digress.

Morning light is challenging to come by in Acadia in the summer because it requires getting out of bed at 03:30 at the latest to get in position for sunrise colors. All too often great plans of beautiful light are squelched by the ever pervasive "marine layer", a fog bank that blocks the light from getting through up to about a thousand feet. It takes commitment and determination to get up the next day and the next until the law of averages yields a rewarding morning like this one.

]]>A minimalistic extract that was provided to me when I was least expecting this. I arrived at this pond on Mount Desert Island in Somesville with the intention of shooting morning light silhouetting a small island in the middle of the pond, however the scene was just kind of flat and mundane that morning so as I was lamenting that a leaf fell off a tree to my right and slowly began coursing in front of me carried by a slow current. My first reaction was to change lenses to make a different kind of composition but I realized I wouldn't have time and instead composed this scene where suddenly the leaf was floating on a layer of clouds and water reflected together. I couldn't have planned it better.

Every fall hundreds of photographers come to Acadia to photograph the foliage and dozens of pros come to lead workshops to give the participants gorgeous shots of New England autumn, this is more of a hidden spot though, much more hard to come by and resembles more of the intimate nature of Acadia. In the end though, at that time of year, no matter where you look there is a beautiful picture of fall to be had.

]]>The New England coastline, in Maine particularly, is a jagged toe-stubbing seaweed-slipping jumble of slippery boulders, because of which there are infinite microcosms to explore as a photographer. On this summer afternoon I went shooting coastline in Acadia National Park, and deliberately went to places that I wouldn't think would be interesting only to find this scene with this wonderfully charactered piece of driftwood waiting to be imaged.

]]>This is one of my favourite go-to destinations in Acadia, I've made a bunch of great scenes here and on this morning it just wasn't coming to me so I had to go for a walk along the lakeshore to find my composition. Muck Boots rule in these situations because to get the correct vantage point you have to do a bit of wading, the storm provided enough drama skies and agitated lake surface to give me the milky water and brooding skies look that I was hoping for.

]]>After shooting waterfalls for an afternoon on the slopes of Cadillac mountain after a hard rain I arrived back at the parking lot at Bubble Pond and decided to go up to the pond for a quick view- Bubble pod I have shot many times but something about it always challenges my sense of compositional balance- to make this shot I changed the foreground by wading out past the first few boulders to find a more balanced arrangement that would properly balance the hills. And it's a triangle which complements the other triangles in the shot and is a most strong visual element to ground the shot-
